Melascend® is a nutraceutical product intended for oral administration to patients with autism spectrum disorders, that can be compounded to specifically meet the needs of each individual patient.
Melascend® is a unique combination of melatonin USP and zinc acetate dehydrate USP, which is compounded with inert excipients in a 1:1 molar ratio. The final dosage form is a microtriturate granulation, and the granules are further coated with cellacefate NF, a pH-sensitive coating that facilitates dissolution and absorption in the small intestines. In this way, the melatonin and zinc avoid absorption into the blood, and are delivered directly to the portal circulation, where they are utilized by the liver for the manufacture of important zinc metalloenzymes, and to maintain the integrity of enterocyte tight junctions and mitochondrial respiration.
